PASADENA, Calif. — Leonard Nimoy, who made one guest appearance on “Fringe” last season in a pivotal role, will return in Season 2. And, according to the show’s producers, he’s welcome to appear any time.

“As much as he wants, truly,” executive producer Jeff Pinkner said. “We’ve made an open invitation. We’ve already filmed one of them.”

“There will be several more for sure,” added executive producer J.H. Wyman.

(The second-season premiere of “Fringe” is scheduled to air Thursday, Sept. 17, at 8 p.m. on Fox/Ch. 13)

Anna Torv, who stars as Olivia Dunham on “Fringe,” said it was “extremely” cool to have a sci-fi TV legend like Nimoy — most famous for his “Star Trek” role of Spock — on the set.

“Unfortunately, the set wasn’t very cool when he was on there, though,” she added. “It was like a heat wave in Vancouver.”

“Fringe” is produced in Vancouver, British Columbia, where you might think it would be cooler than, say, Los Angeles. But that isn’t always the case.

“It was 106 degrees outside,” Pinkner said. “And unlike Los Angeles or New York, the sound stages in Vancouver don’t have air-conditioning. It was 120-some degrees inside, and like a pro, (Nimoy) sat there all day. He never went back to his trailer, and did pages and pages and pages of dialogue and scenes with Anna.”

Premieres on Thursday, Sept. 17 (9/8c) on FOX

We last left Fringe in a very odd place. David Robert Jones (Jared Harris), the closest thing to an antagonist that the show has, was bisected by a closing dimensional rift, while Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv) traveled to the alternate dimension to meet with William Bell (Leonard Nimoy). It was later revealed to the audience (though not to Peter) that Walter actually took Peter out of the alternate universe after this dimension’s Peter died as a child. It was a lot to chew on over the break, but don’t expect the season premiere to relieve much of the mystery. It is, after all, a show that thrives on mysteries.

However, if you’ve kept up with spoilers at all, you know that a new menagerie of characters will be coming to expand the series’ second season, which will begin with the episode “A New Day in the Old Town,” and will continue on with a string of strangely titled episodes (“The Night of Desirable Objects”? What’s that supposed to mean?). Here’s what FOX had to say about the new season.

Fox’s hit paranormal-investigation series Fringe had its moment on the stage at Comic-Con on Saturday, and when we got a chance to talk with stars Joshua Jackson and John Noble, they gave us a sneak peek at the storyline that’s going to rip apart the characters in season two…

According to both Jackson and Noble, in season two the newfound relationship between the Bishops will be undermined by Walter’s secret. (In case you tuned out late last season, Walter relocated an alternate-universe version of Peter to our world and “real” Peter is dead.)

Jackson told us, “Just when [Walter and Peter] get into some Fringe-y sense of a positive family dynamic, that secret is going to come out, and when it comes out, it can’t help but shatter the dynamic between these two guys…That little child within Peter who’s getting hurt is going to get really, really angry.”

But Noble says we shouldn’t expect the meltdown to happen right away. By Noble’s reckoning, “There will be no answers early on. We don’t want to let Peter in on that too early. I think it will be toward the second half of the season, I think it will be a massive episode and I think it will be very ugly.”

On the other hand, Noble tells us that Walter and Astrid (Jasika Nicole) have a scene together early in the season, “and it’s very sweet.” The extremely endearing Jasika Nicole told us, “Astrid has this lovely sweet scene with Walter, and it’s not just about the jokes and the one-liners. It was the chance for you to know a tiny bit more about her and their relationship and it was the greatest thing.” Awww…

OTHER NEWS AND NOTES

* What about supposedly fired Kirk Acevedo, who played Olivia’s FBI partner Charlie Francis? Executive producer Jeff Pinkner told the audience at Comic-Con, “Rumors of Charlie’s demise were premature. But I do think that Charlie’s going to undergo some drastic changes, which hopefully will be surprising and entertaining. And we’ve already met alternate Charlie as well. He had a scar on his face. Kirk’s part of our family.” Huh, well, if you ask us, that’s just more unconvincing hedging on this issue.
* The incredibly sweet and earnest Anna Torv joked with the crowd at the panel, “I can’t wait to meet the parallel Olivia. She’s going to have a really thick Australian accent, and she’ll get to laugh.”
* When asked what advice she would give her character, Olivia Dunham, Anna Torv suggested, “Sweetheart, just take a day off.”
* According to John Noble, acclaimed screenwriter Akiva Goldsman penned the season premiere.
* Walter Bishop and William Bell will meet in the fourth episode of the second season. Noble told us, “I’m doing my first scene with Leonard [Nimoy] next Wednesday.”
* Oh, dear. Someone put a microchip in Walter, because as executive producer J.H. Wyman puts it, “For me the thought of Walter going out on his own is awesome, I mean, he gets lost…wouldn’t he?”
* Jasika also told us, “I was told Astrid’s getting out of the lab this season, more than three times, to do cool things. I don’t have details, but I’m thinking a gun and handcuffs.” Sweet!

Fox is giving its weird-science drama, “Fringe,” the benefit of a second-season renewal.

The network’s announcement makes official what was already clear: “Fringe” premiered last September to become only one of a handful of new series to qualify as a hit.

The mystery thriller stars Anna Torv, Joshua Jackson and John Noble in a quest against science-based attacks waged on the world.

J.J. Abrams is a co-creator and executive producer of the show. His other credits include the TV series “Lost” and “Alias.” He is also the director of the much-awaited new “Star Trek” film.

As the television season approaches its end, fans can get ready for big finales for their favorite shows. How will Jack Bauer save the day this time? How desperate will the Housewives get? Fringe has started laying the groundwork for an interdimensional war and star Anna Torv needs to know who she’s fighting.

“I want to know about that because it seems like Olivia’s kind of interlinked to that, “Torv said. “We keep getting more and more little bits and pieces of information. In the next couple of episodes, David Robert Jones comes back, Harris comes back. It’s a J.J. show so every time you get to satiate one desire, it’s like a whole other one gets opened. I love the idea of that. It’s left me wanting a lot more.”

In its first season, Fringe is still setting everything up, so this finale might ask more questions than it answers. “We still don’t quite know who this war is between or why yet, so I think that’s what she’s struggling with. At the moment, it definitely gives her the ability to access the information.”

Olivia Dunham, Torv’s character, doesn’t let rules get in the way of her mission. “She does break the rules a lot. See, I always think that she’s really straight and really does the right thing, but she does. She just shoots people and kills people all the time, doesn’t she? She keeps breaking the rules.”

One of the last scenes Torv shot this year, but perhaps not a scene from the finale, was a showdown between Olivia and her resident eccentric scientist Walter Bishop (John Noble), who experimented on her as a child. “Olivia does a scene that I really loved. Olivia does go to confront Walter but that’s actually not in the finale. That kind of leaked into different bits and pieces. I can’t say my favorite stuff.”

It has been a big year for Torv, getting discovered by J.J. Abrams for a show that became a hit, and on which she met her husband, Mark Valley. “I know, I don’t know how I got so lucky. I don’t know how I got so lucky. It’s been a huge year, and really fun.”
